Okells Workshops

Join one of our popular classes hosted by talented artists and makers. Every week we offer workshops from popular floral classes, painting, ceramics, willow weaving, jewellery making, printing, drawing and more.

Our inspirational classes will teach you new creative and practical skills, you’ll take away your day’s work and have the confidence to carry on at home.

Workshops are either half days or full days where our students pause for lunch in our coffee shop, taking a moment to reflect and chat with new friends.

All workshops include materials, coffee, cake and lunch if you’re on a full day class.

Oil Painting with Sue Farrington

From traditional still life to contemporary landscapes, Sue covers many techniques and tips to help you get started or improve. Her popular workshops range from the single day to an extended course of mornings, offering a chance to form strong friendships with fellow students. Sue’s informative & creative workshops will give you the confidence to carry on at home and you’ll be able to take away the work you make during class.

Willow Weaving with Sarah Gallagher-Hayes

Learn a new skill and create a stunning sculpture for your home or garden in a single day. Sarah runs many workshops, from seasonal stag’s heads to small scale animals (hares, geese...) and large obelisks with sculptural tops. Under Sarah’s close guidance, workshop students create amazing pieces to take home & enjoy.

Vintage Paint with Kim Evans

Want to learn how to up-cycle and renew pre-loved furniture? Our beginners course teaches you how to paint and distress, covering everything from which paint to use and how to prepare surfaces to creating a durable finish. You’ll start by creating sample boards to test your knowledge then work up to a fully painted tray to take home, along with the confidence to renew your own furniture and avoid common mistakes.

Geometric Abstraction with Ali Kippax

The workshop will be focusing on well defined geometric shapes, the inspiration coming from architectural sources.

Individual support will be given to help direct composition, scale and colour selection.

We will be using the flat and opaque application of acrylic paint with vinyl tape to define the required shapes.

To gain the full impact of the strong shapes and colours we will be working on A2 canvases.

Coastal Landscapes with Ali Kippax

A practising Artist with over 30 years teaching experience, Ali's classes are fun, creative & informative, covering both abstract acrylics & pastels creating textural elements with collage and exploring many different mark making techniques.


Mark Making - Stage 1

This workshop involves the interpretation of the coastal landscape through unconventional mark making, using everything other than brushes! Exploration of card, string, sponges, fingers, palette knives as a means of applying acrylic paint to the surface.

Initial quick studies using inks will encourage spontaneity.

Advice will be given on final compositions, colours and paint application.

It is expected that several A4/A3 pieces will be achieved by the end of the session.

Applied Surfaces Using Collage & Mixed Media - Stage 2

The focus for this workshop will be representing the coastal landscape through applied surfaces and paper collage – an unconventional and expressive approach that encourages creativity and experimentation of materials and media.

Advice will be given on the balance of composition, colour and textural distribution across the image.

It is expected that several preliminary pieces together with one A3 final outcome will be achieved by the end of the session.

Abstract Coastal Landscapes on A2 Canvases – Stage 3

Easels will be used to work on the vertical plane to achieve large scale paintings, using acrylic paint and possible mixed media textures.

Preliminary studies together with a final canvas will be achieved by the end of the workshop.

It's best to dress for mess! (Although we do supply aprons).

There is ample free parking on site & directions are available on our contact page.

Meeting in the Workshop (situated at the rear of the Gift Shop) at 9.45am gives time for informal coffee & introductions.

Working through until 12pm, a delicious selection of sandwiches, salad & cakes will be served on a reserved table in our lovely coffee shop. (Complementary tea & coffee is also available throughout the day).

Most courses finish at 3pm, however if you need extra time to complete or dry your creative piece, the workshop will usually remain open for a short time after.

Q – What time do the workshops start and end?

Full day workshops - 10am to 3pm
Half day workshops - 10am to 1pm
5 week courses - 9.45am to 12.45pm

These are the typical times for most of our workshops but make sure to check your workshops description and your confirmation email. But if in doubt, just ask.

Q – Is there disabled access into the workshop?

Yes - there is full access in all areas and a disabled loo in the Coffee Shop.

Q – Is there ample parking?

Yes we have a very large, FREE car park on site!

Q – What do I wear?

Aprons are provided for all our workshops, however please wear old clothes are preferable (especially if Oil Painting, or Printmaking!) bring a removeable layer too as the workshop can get very warm in the Summer and can start off quite chilly in the Winter!

Q – What should I bring?

Your creativity! We provide everything you need for all of our sessions. If you have any of your own tools or materials then you're welcome to bring them along too! Please check your confirmation email for any course specific instructions.

Q – What if I'm late?

Don't worry, we'll make a start & you should be able to catch up... just let us know as soon as you can!

Q – What happens at lunch time?

We will provide a delicious lunch in our lovely Coffee Shop... take a break from the workshop & enjoy the chance to chat to your fellow students!

Q – Do you cater for allergies/food intolerances?

Yes, just let us know when you make the booking (on the checkout page) and we'll ensure your food is served seperately & safely.

Q – Can I use standard Okells Vouchers towards a workshop place?

Yes, but only if you pay in the Gift shop at the tills, don't worry the staff will guide you through this!
